If I am selling coconut oil, can I get a trademark on the words "Coconut Oil"?

Generic terms or common words for products or services cannot function as trademarks because that would prevent others from rightfully using the common name for the product or service that they make / supply.

A trademark is also used to distinguish the product from other products, and hence common words cannot be used for that would defeat the purpose of the trademark.
