The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (India)

This act establishes the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and regulates food safety and standards in India. FSSAI registration is mandated under this act for businesses involved in activities like manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of food items.

As per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, it is mandatory for all food business operators to complete FSSAI registration. A FSSAI license is mandatory for every food product business in India, and the food license number is provided post-registration. Irrespective of whether you are a retail, wholesaler, manufacturer, e-commerce seller, or involved in the distribution or transport of food products, FSSAI registration is mandatory. The FSSAI registration application can be filed online by food product business owners through Vakilsearch.

    What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body functioning under the ministry of health and family welfare and is an organisation that regulates food safety in India. The main FSSAI role is to regulate the manufacture, sale, and import of food articles and establish particular standards to ensure food safety throughout India. It is an autonomous statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The main purpose of FSSAI is to set and enforce food quality standards across all the food business sectors in India. It is mandatory for food business operators to obtain an FSSAI license to conduct their operations without any hindrance.

    Benefits of FSSAI Registration

FSSAI registration provides multiple benefits to food business owners, including increased brand value, better business expansion, legal benefits, and enhanced consumer trust. Here is a complete outline of the benefits:

    Access to Information

Post-registration, food business owners gain access to important data and resources about food safety and quality, which is further enhanced by obtaining an FSSAI license. The FSSAI offers best practices, information, and updates on a regular basis, which can assist food firms in streamlining their processes and keeping up-to-date with industry advancements.

Use of FSSAI logo and Increased Consumer Trust

Registered food business operators can use the FSSAI logo on the product, which helps in creating better trust with consumers. An FSSAI license essentially serves as evidence to suppliers, customers, and other interested parties that the food industry upholds standards of quality and safety.

    Reduced Risk

FSSAI licensing requires you to follow the FSSAI's stringent requirements for food safety and quality for periodic inspections to make sure to meet the quality standards. Therefore, food establishments can lower the risk of food safety issues and safeguard their patrons by adhering to these regulations.

    Legal Advantages

Following the rules and regulations of the FSSAI certificate, the food business operators assure that they operate within the food safety regulations. These complaints reduce the legal risks associated with the final product sales. Following mandatory protocols ensures consumers will be protected and provides legal cover in case of any potential litigation.

    Better Expansion Opportunities

Getting an FSSAI license can also aid in the growth of food enterprises. Food companies that hold an FSSAI license, for instance, are able to offer their goods to hospitals, schools, and government agencies, all of which demand that their suppliers hold an FSSAI license.

    Eligibility Criteria for FSSAI Registration
